Myvatn Nature Baths highlights
Geothermal pools
The lagoon’s geothermal waters flow from Bjarnarflag power station, starting at 130°C before settling at a comfortable 36-40°C. Packed with minerals and naturally bacteria-resistant, the alkaline water is great for bathing, with sulfur known to benefit respiratory health and skin.
Steam baths
Steam rises naturally from the ground, with temperature and humidity dancing to the weather’s tune—typically 45°C with nearly 100% humidity. Relax with a view of Lake Myvatn through panoramic windows, cool off under an outdoor shower, and stretch, breathe, and soak like a true Icelander!
Cafe Kvika
Treat yourself to a light lunch, dinner, or just a cozy coffee at the café. Don’t miss the local Skútaís ice cream—it’s a must-try! For an authentic taste, enjoy geyser-baked bread with smoked arctic char, or try their hearty soups and fresh salads.

From June to August, Myvatn Nature Baths buzz with energy as temperatures hover between 10°C and 15°C, the landscapes turn lush green, and the sun barely sets. Expect plenty of visitors soaking up the midnight sun. From September to May, things quiet down, with temperatures dropping from around 5°C to as low as -20°C in winter, and the autumn landscape complements the icy air. Bonus? You might catch the Northern Lights—just check the shorter opening hours before heading out!
Want to avoid the noise? Visit on weekdays around 10am before the crowds roll in. Afternoons (2pm to 6pm) and weekends are the busiest, with more tourists after sightseeing. Evenings, after 7pm, are ideal for a relaxing dip, with fewer people and stunning views of a summer sunset or the Northern Lights in winter.
Getting there By car: Myvatn Nature Baths are located just off Iceland’s Ring Road (Route 1). For those traveling clockwise around the country, the baths are about an hour’s drive from Akureyri. By air: Myvatn is accessible by plane via Akureyri or Husavik airports. The baths are 40 to 60 minutes away from the airports.
It is required to take a shower before entering the lagoons. There are 2-3 private showers located inside each of the changing rooms, equipped with soap, shampoo, and conditioner.
Bringing your own alcohol isn’t allowed in the lagoon, but drinks are available. Purchase a beer or wine bracelet at reception, and a staff member outside will serve your drink while you relax in the warm water.
Lockers are included in the entry fee, and a coin for the same is given at reception when you enter.
In case you forget to bring your towel, you can rent one at the reception. To avoid rental fees, bring your own swimsuit, towel, and flip-flops, and consider a waterproof phone case. In winter, the walk between pools can get chilly, so pack a robe or extra towel.
Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle or enjoy the clean geothermal water on-site.
Be cautious as walkways, pools, and steps may be slippery when wet. Follow staff guidance and posted signs for a safe visit.
For a quieter experience with fewer crowds, try to visit Myvatn Nature Baths in the morning, between 10am and 12pm.
