Langjokull Glacier ice tunnel: A man-made passage inside Iceland’s ice cap

Carved deep into Langjokull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier, this year-round ice tunnel lets visitors walk through glowing blue ice corridors while learning how glaciers form and move. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can explore a glacier safely from the inside.

Where is it located?

The ice tunnel is located within Langjokull Glacier in West Iceland, around 2 hours from Reykjavik, near the Husafell area.

How to access?

Access is only possible on guided tours, typically via a Super Jeep or snowcat, with entry to the ice tunnel included in the tour ticket.

Things to know before booking Langjokull Glacier tour tickets

  • Access is tour-based only: Langjokull Glacier, including the Ice Tunnel, cannot be visited independently. All access is via certified guided tours due to crevasses, shifting ice, and strict safety regulations.
  • Different departure areas, different experiences:
  1. Husafell tours focus on the man-made Langjokull Ice Tunnel, offering controlled access deep inside the glacier with stable walkways and lighting.
  2. Gullfoss departures usually combine glacier access with snowmobiling or monster truck rides, emphasizing open ice fields, speed, and panoramic highland views.
  • Ice Tunnel difficulty & suitability: The ice tunnel experience is moderate and beginner-friendly, suitable for most visitors with basic mobility. Walking is required on icy but leveled surfaces. It is not wheelchair accessible.
  • Adventure activity restrictions: Snowmobile tours require participants to meet minimum age limits and, in some cases, hold a valid driver’s license. Monster truck experiences may have height, age, or weather-based restrictions due to vehicle safety requirements.
  • Safety & equipment: All tours are led by trained glacier guides. Essential safety gear, such as helmets, crampons, and thermal suits, is provided where required. Participants must follow guide instructions at all times.
  • Weather-dependent access: Glacier conditions change rapidly. Tours may be rerouted, delayed, or canceled based on weather, visibility, or ice safety assessments.

Entering the ice tunnel

Step off your snowcat or Super Jeep and enter a hand-carved tunnel leading deep into Langjokull. The temperature drops instantly as compacted snow gives way to solid blue ice, marking the transition from surface glacier to its ancient inner layers.

Blue ice corridors

Walk through glowing blue passageways sculpted from centuries-old ice. These corridors reveal compressed air bubbles and flowing ice patterns, offering a rare, close-up view of how glaciers slowly move and reshape themselves over time.

Ice chambers & caverns

Pause inside wider ice chambers where the tunnel opens up dramatically. Guides explain how these spaces are carved and maintained each year, as well as how shifting glacier pressure constantly alters the tunnel’s shape and structure.

Glacier layers & ice walls

Get up close to exposed ice walls showing distinct layers formed over hundreds of years. Each band represents snowfall from different eras, turning the tunnel into a living timeline of Iceland’s changing climate.

Educational stops with guides

Along the route, guides stop to explain glacier science, climate change, and Langjokull’s role in Iceland’s landscape. These insights transform the walk from a visual spectacle into an immersive learning experience inside a living glacier.
